Carox is the Cat Radar Codex — the game’s named map system, and it is on from the first minute by developer design. That is not a minor convenience. It is a deliberate choice to keep the Metroidvania welcoming for genre newcomers. If you have spent any time in earlier Fatal Claw guides, you have seen Carox mentioned as the answer to backtracking confusion. This page is the meta reference: what Carox does, what it does not do, the marker habits that pay for the whole run, and the known bugs that show up in player reports.
What Carox Does
Carox has three jobs, and keeping them separate keeps the map readable.
| Job | What it shows | How it helps |
|---|---|---|
| Room color-coding | Rooms are tinted by biome as you walk them | A glance at the map tells you which zone a room belongs to without reading the label |
| Hazard auto-pinging | Water, barriers, and locked ledges get auto-markers | You do not have to remember where the dangerous rooms were |
| Codex tracking | Journals and lore entries live in the codex half | Carox doubles as a memory book for narrative cleanup |
That third role matters later than the first two. The codex half fills up slowly across the run and becomes the cleanup checklist for ending-state questions.
Marker Habits That Pay
The single most useful habit is also the easiest to skip: drop a custom marker on every dead end and every locked ledge the moment you meet it. Then sweep those markers after every boss reward that hands you a new movement tool.
The loop is simple:
- See a dead end or a locked ledge → drop a marker.
- Fight a boss that gives you a Mutated Ability or a movement unlock.
- Sweep the markers that the new tool solves.
- Leave the markers that still need story objects or later bosses.
This is the same backtracking principle from Fatal Claw Beginner Tips, but applied to the map layer specifically. Without markers, the late-game sweep through Elord Castle and the castle-return backtracking becomes guesswork. With markers, it becomes a checklist.
Fast Travel: Stone Warp And Waypoint Gates
Fast travel runs on two systems. Stone Warp is the verb you trigger at rest points; it becomes useful once you hold several. Waypoint gates are the room-level shortcuts you unlock as you progress. Together they cover the bulk of late-game travel, but they have rules.
The most repeated trap sits in Upper Elord Castle. A local Stone Warp lever wants activation before you warp out, or progression can stall on a later return. The bug was patched in an Early Access update, but the habit is still good route discipline — activate local mechanisms before relying on fast travel. The Elord Castle region guide covers this in detail.
Known Bugs
Two glitches recur in player reports and on the Steam community discussions. Neither is fatal, and both have workarounds.
- Empty-cutscene drop on fast travel. Warping can drop Kisha into an empty cutscene map with no exits. The fix is to reload from the menu or re-warp to a different rest point. This is the bug referenced in the Steam thread “Map or fast travel bug?”.
- Teleport-layer glitch at Vanrion’s Gate. Community-named, it can leave Kisha stuck between collision layers after a warp interaction. Reload or walk back out of the trigger zone and re-enter.
For more on the wider bug set, see the 1.0.8 hotfix notes and the community bug posts for current threads.
What Carox Cannot Do
Carox is a navigation tool, not a key. Locked doors want Mutated Abilities or story objects — King’s Authority, the green ID card, and the Sanctuary Keys are the most common examples. Carox can mark those doors, but it cannot open them. If a door stays shut after a warp, check whether you have the relevant ability or item before blaming the map.
The same rule applies to Cabitz, Engraved Skills, and Claw upgrades. Carox tracks the rooms; the build layers solve them.
